Introduction to Expert Services of IOEH

Expert Services provided by IOEH accounts for significant part of all IOEH activities. IOEH regularly provides wide range of different services for different industries, woodworking and agriculture. Range of services includes variety of hygienic measurements (by Laboratory of Hygiene and Occupational Diseases) and detailed health status examination (by the Centre of Occupational and Radiological Medicine).

The great advantage of Expert Services provided by IOEH lays in complex solutions and expertise that we are able to provide: from hygienic measurements and work place evaluation till health status examination and delivery of specific training programmes created for particular enterprise or industry. Crucial role is also played by the high professional level of our staff.

Hygienic measurements & Work place evaluation

Wide range of hygienic measurements is provided by the Laboratory of Hygiene and Occupational diseases. This includes measurements of many hazardous factors (noise, vibration, climate etc.) and substances (chemical, biological etc.)

Main tasks of the Laboratory:

• to carry out scientific work on questions related to the workers health;
• to estimate and analyze the impact of environmental factors to human health;
• to work out sanitary standards for chemical substances, pharmaceutical substances, microorganisms and etc.;
• to carry out toxicological and hygienic expertise for:

• different chemical and domestic substances used in different industries and daily life, i.e. paints, creams, cleaning liquids and lacquers etc.;
• biopreparates;
• building materials;
• medical products

• to estimate concentrations of harmful chemical substances in air of workplaces, in atmosphere, in water and in biomaterials (blood, hair, urine and etc.);
• to carry out measurements of harmful physical environmental factors (noise, vibration and etc.).

Laboratory also provides Work place evaluation which is a principially new thing for Latvia.

Health Statuss evaluation and diagnosis of Occupational diseases, Work ability expertise

Clinical part of IOEH Expert Services is provided by the Centre of Occupational and Radiological Medicine located at P. Stradina Clinical Hospital. Centre provides wide range of clinical examinations at hospital as well as on work place visits. Specialists of Centre have the highest qualifications in Occupational and Radiological medicine. IOEH has recently purchased new equipment for clinical examinations (spirometers, audiographs and etc.). There is also a special commission on occupational diseases that serves as an only official body in Latvia that are licensed to connect a diseases with working conditions, i.e. to confirm the diagnose of occupational diseases. A new approach to evaluation of workers health status or work ability expertise has been introduced recently. Centre also provides diagnose of occupational allergic diseases.

Specific training programmes

IOEH also provides specific training programmes for different branches of industry covering many aspects of occupational health & safety. These programmes often contain training on theoretical basis of occupational health & safety, work safety, health promotion and first aid on work place. IOEH also provides training for labour inspectors and safety engineers.
